What is neuropsychoanalysis?

A short introduction to the discipline that studies the mind and the brain together — its central idea, where it came from, and why it matters for understanding and treating the human being.

The central idea

One mind, seen from two sides

Neuropsychoanalysis begins from a simple but radical premise: the mind and the brain are not two separate things, but one and the same thing perceived in two different ways.

From the outside, through observation and measurement, we see the brain. From the inside, through lived experience, we know the mind. This position — often called dual-aspect monism — allows psychoanalysis and neuroscience to describe the same human being in complementary languages, rather than competing for a single truth.

Where much of neuroscience once set feeling and meaning aside, neuropsychoanalysis places subjective experience — and above all affect, the raw capacity to feel — at the very centre of what a science of the mind must explain.

Origins

From Freud's unfinished project to a science of feeling

The ambition is not new. In 1895 Freud drafted a "Project for a Scientific Psychology," an attempt to ground the mind in the biology of the brain.

He abandoned it — the neuroscience of his day could not carry the weight — and turned instead to the purely psychological method that became psychoanalysis. The biological question was left open, but never withdrawn.

A century later, the tools had caught up. Around the turn of the millennium a group of clinicians and researchers — with the neuropsychologist and psychoanalyst Mark Solms among its central figures — revived Freud's original ambition with the resources of modern brain science. The term "neuropsychoanalysis" was coined, the journal Neuropsychoanalysis was founded in 1999, and an international society formed to hold the two disciplines in sustained dialogue.

The unconscious is not only a store of repressed thoughts. At its root it is affective — a matter of feeling before it is a matter of ideas.

Three thinkers, one framework

Jaap Panksepp Affective neuroscience

Panksepp showed that emotions are not late cultural additions but ancient, hard-wired systems shared across mammals — the biological sources of feeling that give the mind its motivational core.

Karl Friston The free-energy principle

Friston describes the brain as a prediction machine that works constantly to minimise surprise — a mathematical account of how a nervous system builds and updates a model of its world.

Mark Solms Neuropsychoanalysis

Solms brought these strands together, arguing that consciousness is rooted in affect and can be understood through the predictive brain — a synthesis that reconnects Freud's clinical insight with contemporary neuroscience.

Why it matters

A sharper clinic, a richer science

For the consulting room, this is more than theory. If emotions are biological systems with their own logic, and psychological suffering reflects how those systems are regulated, then understanding the brain can sharpen — not replace — the psychoanalytic understanding of a person.

Neuropsychoanalysis aims to make clinical work more precise without losing sight of meaning, biography, and the unconscious. And it works in the other direction too: the clinic returns questions to the laboratory. What patients reveal about dreams, emotion, and the sense of self becomes material for research into how the mind is built.
